Edward Dutton w książce zatytułowanej "Przysłani przed swym czasem. Geniusz, charyzma a bycie wcześniakiem" (Sent Before Their Time: Genius, Charisma, and Being Born Prematurely) - stawia niezwykle śmiałą tezę, że istnieje ścisły związek między geniuszem a byciem wcześniakiem. Nie każdy geniusz był wcześniakiem ale bardzo wielu wcześniaków ( dysproporcja duża) było geniuszami. Co ciekawe wiele osób ze spektrum autyzmu to także wcześniaccy - a spora część z nich odznacza się cechami typowymi dla geniuszy.
Rozumowanie Duttona - ktory sam był wcześniakiem - w największym uproszczeniu jest następujące: Dziecko rodzi się wcześniej (ale nie za wcześnie bo wtedy zmiany w mózgu są nieodwracalne) i ma określone problemy zdrowotne w tym wybrakowany mózg. Zdolności regeneracyjne mózgu pozwalają jednakże na jego odbudowę. Przy czym w trakcie tego procesu pojawia się inna architektonika mózgu - co przesądza o tym, iż taki wcześniak myśli INACZEJ niż jego "standardowi" rówieśnicy. I ta inność myślenia stanowi kanwę na której może się rozwinąć geniusz.
