"Krótką historię czasu" jego autorstwa przeczytałem nawet ja - chociaż przyznać muszę, iż nie wszystko co tam napisano było zrozumiałe dla mego humanistycznego umysłu. Hawking nie tylko wielkim fizykiem był. Był także sympatykiem sprawy palestyńskiej i ostrym krytykiem Izraela oraz jego rasistowskiej polityki względem Palestyńczyków. W 2009 roku, udzielając wywiadu dziennikarzowi Al Jazeera potępił - trwający trzy tygodnie - izraelski ostrzał rakietowy strefy Gazy, oświadczając, iż "był on absurdalnie nieproporcjonalny (względem akcji palestyńskiej - Arminius)...i że sytuacja jest jak w Południowej Afryce przed 1990 rokiem (czyli w okresie gdy stosowano tam politykę apartheidu - Arminius) i nie może tak dalej trwać".
W 2013 r. Hawking zbojkotował - w ramach protestu przeciwko polityce Izraela i na prośbę palestyńskich naukowców - izraelską konferencję z udziałem prezydenta Izraela - udzielając tym samym poparcia ruchowi BDS nawołującego do sankcji i bojkotu Izraela.

Hawking is in very poor health, but last week he wrote a brief letter to the Israeli president to say he had changed his mind. He has not announced his decision publicly, but a statement published by the British Committee for the Universities of Palestine with Hawking's approval described it as "his independent decision to respect the boycott, based upon his knowledge of Palestine, and on the unanimous advice of his own academic contacts there".
