Pojęcia takie jak "pustynia" czy "dezertyfikacja" kojarzą się jednoznacznie z obszarami suchymi, wybitnie nasłonecznionymi, z minimalnymi opadami deszczu. Jednakże to stereotyp - szczególnie zważywszy na aktualną, zmodyfikowaną definicję terminu "pustynia" - w której akcent kładzie się na jałowość i nieurodzajność danego terenu. W Europie najbardziej wyrazistym przykładem dezertyfikacji obszaru na dużą skalę jest....Islandia - na której jest jak wiadomo mnóstwo lodu i śniegu, a na deszcz jest aż 24 określenia.
Rzecz jednakże w tym, iż na Islandii nie ma drzew. Gdy Wikingowie się pojawili na wyspie była ona zalesiona w 25-40 %), w chwili obecnej jest to obszar 2%. Do tego trawę i krzewinki wyżerają wszędobylskie owce, których na Islandii jest ok. sześciuset tysięcy - dwa razy więcej niż ludzi.
Finalny skutek jest taki, iż powierzchnia ziemi - nie chroniona szatą roślinną - jest poddawana erozji tak ze strony wody ( ulewne deszcze wypłukujące warstwę gleby) jak i eolicznej - wywiewanie gleby przez silne wiatry.

"Nowadays only 2% of Iceland's area is covered by forests. This is much less than for example in Germany, where about 32% of the overall area is covered by trees. Desertification sounds more like a problem of countries with a lack of rainfall. I couldn't say that I noted any lack of rain during my travels in Iceland. And I guess the fact that the Icelandic language has more than 24 different words to talk about rain, speaks for itself."
